Frances B. Bunzl Family Curator of European Art

Claudia Einecke is the High Museum’s Frances B. Bunzl Family Curator of European Art. She studied art history in her native Germany and in the United States, receiving a Master’s degree from Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, Mainz, and a Doctorate from the University of MissouriColumbia. 

Before coming to the High, Dr. Einecke held curatorial positions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska, and the University Art Museum in Columbia, MissouriIn collaboration with the University Library in Heidelberg, Germany, and the Library of the Staatliche Museen in Berlin, she also directed the digitization of early twentieth-century German and Austrian art auction catalogues for the Provenance Index™ at the Getty Research Institute. 

Dr. Einecke’s primary field of research and scholarship is European art in the Long Nineteenth Century and she has curated a variety of exhibitions in that field, including Renoir in the 20th Century, an international loan exhibition in partnership with the Musée d’Orsay and the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Final Moments: Peyron, David, and The Death of Socrates; and On View to the World: Painting at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition, a recreation of the Fine Arts Pavilion at this World Exposition. Dr. Einecke has also contributed to exhibition and collections catalogues and served on committees for various professional organizations and initiatives, including the association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) and the German/American Provenance Research Exchange Program for Museum Professionals (PREP). 

Since her arrival in Atlanta in 2018, Dr. Einecke has overseen the reinstallation of the High’s European Collections galleries, managed the exhibition European Masterworks: The Phillips Collection, and installed the newly created Doris and Shouky Shaheen Gallery. Her exhibition The Plot Thickens: Storytelling in European Print Series is featured on the High’s website.
