Untitled (Blue and Brown Buildings)

Description

Both Bill Traylor and Clementine Hunter were born on plantations in the South, but in the late 1920s, Traylor moved to Montgomery, Alabama. While many of the people and places in his drawings can be linked to Montgomery’s bustling urban environment, this drawing is an example of how his memories of rural life also influenced his art. The building at left appears to be a small dwelling, similar to those that appear in Hunter’s nearby painting. The brown building adjacent to it, which includes an actively smoking chimney, was probably a smokehouse where meat was prepared and preserved.
