Description
One of the few widely successful African-American women artists of the mid 1900s, sculptor and graphic artist Elizabeth Catlett is perhaps best known for her work’s emphasis on themes of racial injustice. With Target, Catlett summarizes the African-American male experience in a society fraught with social conflict. This piece predates the better-known bronze of the same title and subject, which also includes an enlarged gun sight that literally centers the man’s face in the crosshairs of the viewer.
