Description

Jamian Juliano-Villani’s darkly humorous work offers withering critiques of the art world, as well as contemporary politics and culture. Her paintings are often produced in a style that approaches that of Looney Tunes animator Chuck Jones, and include images sourced from books, magazines, film and television. In Expressions, a nude artist with the face of Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin sports a red beret and is crouched like an animal atop a bed making art, which the artist here conflates with onanism. According to the artist, “pretentiousness is a small part of what the art world is made of. Market, social hierarchies and the elite are all bullshit, but being around creative and interesting people who are pushing the limits is really inspiring.”
