Description
In the summer of 1913 John Marin and his future wife, Marie Hughes, traveled to the town of Castorland in upstate New York. Marin recently had participated in the seminal 1913 Armory Show in New York City, but unlike many of his fellow American exhibitors who continued to derive subject matter from their European contemporaries, Marin had instead turned his attention to distinctly American themes. This abstracted watercolor of the region’s woods and rolling hills, however, reflects the lingering influence of the Fauves on Marin’s bright palette, visible in the intense pinks, blues, and greens.
